4 Tips to Pet-Proof Your Plumbing

For pet owners, keeping their pets clean and safe is of vital importance. While it sometimes comes at the expense of your plumbing system, it doesn’t always have to be this way. You can still thoroughly keep your pets clean and safe without having to sacrifice your plumbing’s functionality. Here are four tips for pet-proofing your plumbing.

Secure Your Pipes and Drains

One way to protect both your pets and plumbing is to secure your pipes and drains. This can be accomplished by covering your floor drains. Smaller pets like puppies, kittens, or hamsters could injure themselves by falling into your drains if left uncovered. In some cases, your pets can even get stuck causing you to have to dismantle your pipes to get them out. Another thing you should be concerned about is your pets scratching or biting the pipes that can be found in your cabinets or under your sink. You want to make sure that your pipes are secure and not easily accessible or else there will be serious repercussions.

Properly Dispose of Your Cat Litter

Improper disposal of your cat litter can cause plumbing issues. A mistake that some pet owners make is flushing cat litter down the toilet. Doing so could clog your drains. Instead, throw your cat litter away in the garbage or someplace similar and suitable.

Close Your Toilet Lids

Although we love them, dogs can cause a bit of mess when they have access to an open toilet. That’s why it’s important to remember to close your toilet lids when you have the chance. By doing so, you can prevent your dog from trying to drink water from the toilet bowl. Not only are you protecting your pet from any harmful chemicals that are used to clean your toilet, but you are also avoiding a potential mess.

Clean Your Drains

After giving your pets a bath in the tub or shower, you need to clean your drain to ensure that no hairs make their way down it. Dogs, in particular, tend to shed and you want to clean up their hairs after bathing them. If you fail to do so, your pipes may get clogged and stuck.
