There are three types of radiator heating systems: Steam heat radiators, Hot water radiators, and Electric radiator heaters.

Steam Heat Radiators: 

A steam heating system uses a boiler to turn water into steam. The steam then funnels through pipes throughout the home using a series of pipes to either:

• Ceramic radiators
• Freestanding cast-iron radiators
• Baseboard steam system

The steam then radiates heat and warms the home. When the steam cools, it condenses back into the main boiler to be heated again. 

Cast-iron steam heat radiators are the oldest form of steam heat radiator. These radiators, which take the longest to heat, are generally found in older homes and apartments. Baseboard steam systems are the choice for owners of newer homes, as these systems are usually more discreet. Cast-iron steam heat radiators are hot to the touch, while ceramic steam radiators are not hot to the touch. 

Hot Water Radiators:

In this heating system, hot water travels from the boiler through a circulating pump to the radiator, which then diffuses the heat and warms the room. The water circulates through the system when the heat is on. 

Electric Radiator Heaters:

Electric radiator heaters function by using a special type of mineral oil, commonly referred to as “thermal oil” or “heat transfer oil.” These heating systems are usually installed as individual units, allowing homeowners to turn off heat in unused areas of the home.
