Helpful Water Heater Repair Tips When Your Water Heater Starts to Leak

Like any plumbing problem, leaky water heaters should be addressed as soon as possible. While waiting for an experienced plumber to arrive, there are several steps you can take to try and fix the leak yourself. We’ve broken down the process so you can take care of that leak quickly and easily.

Turn Off Your Power Supply

Before working on your water heater, the first step is to turn off your power supply. Let your household know not to use the water until you’re done – doing so can cause more damage to the heater and even cause electric shocks! Make sure children are supervised to prevent them from accidentally turning on the water while you’re working.

Turn Off the Water

Next, turn off the water supply to your water heater. This will prevent further damage from being done to your unit while you are fixing the leak. Again, you’ll want to make sure everyone in your home knows the importance of not using faucets, sinks and toilets while you’re working.

Flush Out Your Water Heater

When sediment builds up in your water heater, this can cause it to leak from the bottom. Doing a mini-flush should be your first step in stopping the leak.

To flush the tank, start by turning off the power supply and opening the valve at the bottom. Run cold water for around 10 minutes until you hear sounds coming from the unit and steam starts to come out from under the tank. Next, turn off all faucets and close the valve again.

Check Your Temperature and Pressure Valve

This valve regulates the temperature of the hot water in your home and relieves excess pressure in the tank to prevent damage. If not working properly, pressure can build up and cause a constant stream of water to leak from your faucets.

To fix it, cut the power supply and the water supply to your water heater. Then, turn the thermostat down to 120 degrees Fahrenheit and turn on both valves again. This relieves the pressure in the tank, stopping the leak.
