5 Reasons Your AC Is Blowing Hot Air

Summertime is right around the corner in Southern California, which means that it is important now more than ever to ensure that your AC unit is operating at its maximum efficiency. The last thing anyone wants during the summer months is to turn on their air conditioning unit only to find that it is blowing out hot air. If this occurs, it means that there could be a variety of issues with your air conditioner unit that could require HVAC maintenance or even AC installation or replacement.

Check Your Thermostat – It May Be Set Incorrectly

We know it may sound silly, but this is more common than you think! The first thing you should check before calling an AC repair expert is your thermostat setting.

First, ensure that your thermostat isn’t set to “heat.” It’s possible that you could’ve accidentally bumped the switch, one of your children could’ve played with the switch or any other accident could’ve occurred to reset the switch. Life happens, and mistakes like this occur all the time – it’s better to be safe than sorry!

It’s also important to make sure that your thermostat’s fan settings aren’t accidentally set to “on.” This is quite the opposite of what you’d want on a hot day. When your thermostat’s fan is set to “on,” it will blow air through your vents whether or not your system is actively cooling your home. This means it can blow out hot air if your air conditioner is turned off or taking a break.

In order to have your thermostat’s fan blow out refreshing, cool air, you’ll need to set your thermostat’s fan to “auto.” However, if your thermostat is already set to “cool” and the fan is set to “auto,” then you may need an air conditioner maintenance expert to diagnose and fix your issue.

Your Outdoor Unit May Be Clogged

Central AC units work by using two units, one of which is located outside of your home. Together, the two units work to circulate cool and refreshing air through your home. However, if the unit becomes clogged, it can become increasingly difficult for the unit to disperse cold air properly.

If your outdoor unit becomes clogged with dirt, leaves or other debris, it can restrict airflow, causing it to blow out hot air. This can be easily fixed by cleaning the outdoor unit to remove whatever is blocking the airflow.

Your Outdoor Unit May Have Lost Power

In some cases, your outdoor unit may lose power while your indoor unit continues to operate. This can occur if the breaker to the outdoor unit tripped or if the emergency shutdown switch was turned off. When the unit loses power, it results in the circulation of hot air.

Luckily, this issue usually is easy to fix. All you need to do is reset the breaker or emergency switch. However, if either trip again, it may be best to consider air conditioner repair, as this indicates a serious electrical problem with the unit.

Your Unit’s Coils May Be Dirty

If the coils of your AC unit are dirty, it will restrict airflow, thus resulting in warm air circulating through your vents. The simplest way to avoid this is by scheduling an inspection for your unit. During this inspection, a professional will clean your coils and conduct an air duct cleaning while performing a thorough inspection of your unit.
