Which Air Filter is Right for Your AC Unit?

May 23, 2019

As the weather warms up in Murrieta for the summer, your air conditioning unit will experience more and more use. It’s understandable that you want to keep your home cool and comfortable for your family, but with increased use comes increased maintenance. In order to keep your AC unit running at peak efficiency and avoid AC repair, you need to replace your air filter periodically. But with so many options on the market, which air filter is the best choice for your HVAC system?

Fiberglass

A fiberglass filter is the least expensive and least effective filter option. It’s a cheap and disposable type that is recommended for short-term renters who don’t have allergy problems or pets. They should be replaced every one to three months, depending on the size of the system. Fiberglass filters are made of fiberglass mesh that is woven together in order to attract particles. They catch 80% of particles 50 microns and larger, and they catch 25% of particles three to ten microns in size. Fiberglass filters will filter out large particles to protect the unit’s components, but they don’t filter out the tiny harmful contaminants that affect your health. If you’re looking to save money any way you can and air quality is not a large concern for you, then fiberglass filters would be a suitable option.

Pleated filters

Pleated filters are the next step up from fiberglass filters, and they are one of the most common forms of residential AC filter. They have a greater surface area than a fiberglass filter, and they are also disposable. They cost more than fiberglass, but they do a better job filtering and last much longer. Pleated filters are made with wire backing and synthetic filters. They trap 80% to 95% of particles 5 microns and larger, so they’re suitable for removing bacteria, dust mites, mold, pet dander, and pollen.

Electrostatic

Electrostatic filters are unique in that they are washable rather than disposable, and they use electricity to attract charged particles and trap them. Electrostatic varieties are known for doing well at trapping light dust particles especially. Electrostatic filters can vary in quality, but good quality washable varieties can last up to 8 years before they need to be replaced, making them an excellent low-maintenance option. They only need to be washed periodically so the dust particles can be released, and the filter can continue working efficiently and effectively.

High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA)

High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are some of the most effective air filters on the market. They remove 99.97% of all airborne particles greater than 0.3 microns in size and can help dramatically improve your home’s air quality. They’re made of randomly arranged fiberglass fibers, polymer plastics, and various other woven materials. The downside of HEPA filters is that they drastically restrict airflow; they should only be matched to a compatible air conditioning system. If you are unsure about which HEPA filter is suitable for your HVAC unit, contact ProFlo and consult with an AC repair expert to find a suitable option for your HVAC unit.
